Making my way through Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate (on Normal difficulty), and I'm really enjoying it so far. (I'm a little bit past the second boss.)

The set pieces in the game range from nice looking to gorgeous, and the gameplay is pretty fun (although I still haven't gotten used to using the L button for blocking and rolling). I haven't noticed any frame rate issues so far. I can't see 3D images (legally blind in one eye), so I play with the 3D turned off. Is the frame rate issue only happening with the 3D turned on?

The graphics and art in this game are the best I've seen on the 3DS. Fantastic lighting, detailed backgrounds, appropriately dark art direction... Really, I don't know why Mirror of Fate's graphics and art haven't gotten more praise. I want a sidescrolling Metroid on my 3DS that looks this good. And I don't know if it's just the graphics or the graphics combined with the music, but something about this game has given me a little bit of an Eternal Darkness vibe. I'm not saying Mirror of Fate is just like Eternal Darkness, but something about the atmosphere sort of reminds me of it.

Mirror of Fate is a refreshingly forgiving game. Checkpoints are abundant — so abundant in fact that if I mess up on a quick time event at the end of a boss battle, the only thing I have to retry is that quick time event. Nice. I know there are some out there who prefer it when their every mistake is punished by making them slog through an entire section or an entire boss battle again, but I'm not one of those people. Mirror of Fate, my blood pressure thanks you.

The only negative thing I have to say about Mirror of Fate is that the controls are both needlessly complex and not complex enough. I don't want to mess with blocking or rolling or grabbing enemies for a finishing move. I just want to swing my whip and occasionally fire off my secondary weapon. On the flip side, the simple ability to crouch is oddly absent from this game. I found myself having to roll in order to duck under a projectile fired by a boss.
